A Trip to Srisailam Jyotirling & Tirupati – Part 2

21.10.2010
The distance between Srisailam and Tirupati is approx 400 KM and it takes around 12 hours by bus. From Srisailam to Tirupati there is a bus run by APRTC and we got our tickets booked for this bus one day in advance. We got up in the morning at around 7:00 AM and spent our time till noon in our guest house only. We boarded the bus and started our journey to Tirupati, the bus leaved Srisailam at approx 3:00 PM. The bus was semi sleeper and it was not so comfortable, so we couldn’t sleep entire night.
Introduction to Tirupati
Tirupati is the city located in the Chittor district of Andhra Pradesh State of India It is located at the foothills of the Eastern Ghats at a distance of Approx. 300 kilometres south of Hyderabad, the capital of the state and 150 kilometres north of Chennai.
Tirupati is famous for the Venkateswara Swamy temple dedicated to Lord Venkateswara, located about 10 kilometres (6.2 mi) north west of Tirupati in the Tirumala hills at an elevation of 853 metres (2,799 ft). One of the most important pilgrimage centers in India, the temple draws millions of pilgrims and is the busiest pilgrimage centre in the world
The temple is situated on Venkatadri, one of the seven hills of Tirumala, and hence is also known as the Temple of Seven Hills (Saptagiri in Sanskrit). The presiding deity of the temple, Lord Venkateswara, is also known by other names – Balaji, Vishnu, Govinda and Srinivasa.
The Tirumala Hill is 3,200 feet (980 m) above sea level, and is about 10.33 square miles (27 km2) in area. It comprises seven peaks, representing the seven hoods of Adisesha, thus earning the name, Seshachalam. The seven peaks are called Seshadri, Neeladri, Garudadri, Anjanadri, Vrushabadri, Narayanadri and Venkatadri. The sacred temple of Sri Venkateswara is located on the seventh peak, Venkatadri (Venkata Hill),
The temple is reportedly the richest and the most visited place of worship in the world. The temple is visited by about 50,000 to 100,000 pilgrims daily (3 to 4 crore people annually on an average), while on special occasions and festivals, like the annual Brahmotsavam, the number of pilgrims shoots up to 500,000, making it the most visited holy place in the world.
According to legend, the temple has a murti (deity) of Lord Venkateswara, believed to have resided there for the entire Kali Yuga.

22.10.2010
Well, our bus reached Tirupati at 04:30 AM; we got out of bus at Tirupati bus station, it was dark as the sun was not rose that time, but the but station was so busy even that time that we could say that Tirupati never sleeps. There are buses continuously ply between Tirupati and Tirumala hills and the distance between two is 11 KM, we boarded on an APRTC bus at 05:00 Am which took us Tirumala at 05:45. There are free buses also ply between Tirupati and Tirumala. So after getting down at Tirumala our first priority was to look for a good stay arrangement. We came to know that in Tirumala there is no any private hotels or guest houses, there are only TTD (Tirumal Tirupati Devsthanam) managed cottages (Guest houses), and the rent for these cottages for 24 hrs. is Rs. 50 only, but the problem is that one has to be in queue to get token for cottage and in the queue it normally takes 2-3 hours to reach the counter. I took a queue to get token at 6:00 AM and got token at 8:30 Am. After getting token we took a bus to reach our guest hour. There are free buses run by TTD in Tirumala to reach from one place to another, they look very special and unique and they are ghat eligible buses. In 10 minutes we reached our guest house. We had decided to stay there for 2 days so we were not in a hurry for darshan. After reaching guest house first we got fresh and took bath as we were very tired after a long journey from Srisailam to Tirupati and then 2-3 hours in queue.
After taking bath we were feeling good and little relived from tiredness, so we decided to go out in search of some breakfast. Again we took that special free bus.

Tirumala Free bus
We then went to a restaurant for breakfast, took our breakfast and roam around the temple town (We planned to do darshan next day morning) and went in a complex for some shopping.

Shopping
As we were roaming around the market and at around 12:00 noon suddenly the climate started changing its mood and it started getting dark and cloudy and the whole Tirumala covered with fog and within a few minutes it started drizzling and finally started heavy rain.

As it started raining we took a bus and went straight to our cottage, we were soaked with rain water so first we changed our wet cloths and then laid on bed to take some rest.
In the evening at around 6:00 PM we went in the town in search of food. We came to know that there is a TTD managed canteen where food is served to devotees free of cost as Prasad of lord Venkateswara.

Having dinner (Prasad) in TTD canteen
The food was served on the banana leaves which made it so tasty. After dinner we went to our guest house and gone to bed as in morning we had to wake up early in the morning.
23.10.2010
Next day
Next day we woke up early in the morning at 6:00 Am and got ready for darshan. We decided first to tonsure the heads of mine and my four year old son Vedant to offer them to lord Venkateswara.
Hair tonsuring
Many devotees have their head tonsured and offer them to lord. The daily amount of hair collected is over a ton. The hair thus gathered is sold by the temple organization a few times a year by public auction to international buyers for use as hair extensions and in cosmetics, bringing over $6 million to the temple’s treasury. As per puranas hair given by devotees is to coverup the lost hair(it is a very small portion) of lord venkateshwara swamy.

Vedant after hair tonsuring.
After offering our hairs to lord Venkateswara we bought caps from a shop and then proceeded for darshan of lord Venkateswara.
In order to save our time we purchased Shighra darshan tickets at a charge of Rs. 300 each (Also there are Sudarshan tickets at Rs. 50). Through Shighra darshan tickets one can have darshan in 3-4 hours, and through Rs. 50 ticket it takes approx. 6-7 hrs and in free queue there is no limit, it may take 10-12 hours or more.
So we entered in Vaikuntham Queue complex with our Shighra darshan ticket at 7:00 Am. The entrance is through the vaikuntam queue complex. The complex is a series of interconnected halls that leads to the main temple.
The main temple facing the east is a masterpiece of Dravidian architecture and the Vimana and Dwajasthamba are fully gold plated. This is the third richest pilgrimage centre in the world after the Vatican and Mecca. Lakhs of devotees throng to the temple throughout the year and their belief and faith in this god is stupendous. The annual collections from the votive offerings is ploughed back into various welfare schemes. The specially constituted Devasthanam Board (TTD)oversees the administration including maintenance of roads from Tirumala to Tirupati, guest houses, cottages, etc.

After spending four hours in queue complex we reached to the sanctum sanctorum (Garbh Grih).

In the Garbha Griha, the 7 ft idol of the Lord is made of granite stone standing majestically on a high lotus pedestal. The crown is 20 ft high and the Shanka and Chakra studded with diamonds on both hands dazzle the eye.

Lord Venkateswara (Balaji)
After great darshan of lord in garbh grih we once again arranged ourselves in a queue for prasad. With each Shighra darshan ticket we can get 2 laddus free, so we got 4 laddus as a prasad.
The laddus (Prasad) of Tirupati temple are made of pure ghee and enriched with dryfruits are famous for their delicious taste and big size.
After taking prasad, we moved towords bust stand to take bus for Chennai as our train was from chennai. Chennai is some 120 Km from Tirupati, after reaching Chennai we took a room in hotel.
24.10.2010
Our train was in the morning at 5:00 Am. So we woke up at 04:00 am and took an auto rickshaw to reach Chennai Central Raiklway Station and boarded in train at right time.
25.10.2010
We reached Bhopal in the morning at 10:00 AM, took some breakfast and took a bus for indore and finally reached our home at 7:00 PM, thus ended our cherishing journey to Srisailam and Tirupati.

The 12 Jyotirlinga Temples

The 12 Jyotirlingas and their Location in India
We have decided to visit and have darshan of at least one jyotirling each year, and in this series our last jyotirling yatra was Somnath & Nageshwar (Dwarka). During this yatra we had decided to visit Shrisailam as our next visit and therefore we finalized our tour in the month of October, last year (2010). Since the plan was final, so I got our to and fro reservation well in advance (2.5 months). The tickets were from Bhopal to Hyderabad (Andhra Pradesh Sampark Kranti Express 2708) & return tickets from Chennai to Bhopal (Lucknow Express 6093). The members of trip were I, my wife Kavita, my 11 yrs. Daughter Sanskriti & my 4 yrs. son Vedant. The trip was seven days from 17th Oct. to 23rd Oct.
After getting reservation done, the reverse counting was started and we were eagerly waiting for our journey day to come. Finally the day came and we started on 17th from our home at 10:00 AM and reached Bhopal by bus at 05:00 PM. The trains departure time was 05:55 PM.
17.10.2010 (First Day)
We had some refreshment and got some eatables packed from Bhopal railway station. The train was right time, we boarded the train and started our journey by the holy name of lord Shiva.
18.10.2010
It was an overnight journey and we reached Secunderabad at 09:00 AM. We got down from train and took an auto rickshaw for Jubilee bus stand. From there the buses of APSRTC ply at a good frequency for Shrisailam.
Here I feel it necessary to give you a brief introduction of Srisailam:
Srisailam is a sacred town located in the dense forest of Nallamalla hills in the northeastern area and on the banks of river Krishna in Kurnool District of Andhra Pradesh. It houses the famous Shri Bharamarambha Mallikarjunaswamy temple which is the adobe of one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of lord Shiva. It is situated at 235 kms from Hyderabad, the capital of Andhra Pradesh. Temple is located on a 457 mtr high hill and has Sri Mallikarjunaswamy as a presiding diety
We boarded a bus of APSRTC for Srisailam at 10:00 AM from Jubilee bus stand Secunderabad, the bus took us first the Imliban bus stand at Hyderabad stayed there for approx. 1 hour and then started for Srisailam at 11:00 AM.
From Hyderabad to Srisailam journey usually takes 7 to 8 hours. The entire road is covered with thick forests of Nallamalla and offers the magnificent view of ghats and jungle.

Welcome to Srisailam

Srisailam
Finally we reached Srisailam at 8:00 PM. After getting down from bus we asked the local people for a good place to stay, and they suggested us to take the guest house of Mallikarjunaswamy trust. There are various guest houses managed by Temple trust in different name. We stayed in “Chandeeswara Sadan”. It was a good room with two beds and attached lat. Bath.

Our Guest House “Chandeeswara Sadan” in Srisailam

Another view of Our Guest House
Since we were very tired after a continuous journey of 32 hours (From our home near Indore to Srisailam) and also we were very hungry as it was Monday and was a fast of both of us. We first looked for some north Indian food in Srisailam town but after a search of half an hour we could not get the same, another big problem was language, the local people were not able to speak in hindi I was failed to understand whether they were really not knowing hindi or were pretending to because it is a famous pilgrimage centre and lots of people from other states visit here daily. We felt that nobody was interested in entertaining us so we managed to eat whatever we were offered.
Well, after dinner we gone to bed and because we were badly tired from a very long journey we slept immediately.
19.10.2010
We woke up at around 7:00 AM in the morning and decided to go to temple for darshan and abhishek of lord. The temple was some 1 km. from our guest house. The means of local transport here is auto rickshaws and they are easily available anywhere in the town.
We proceeded to the temple and came to know while reaching the temple that the charge of ticket for early darshan is Rs. 100 per person and charge of Abhishek is Rs. 600, we paid for both and after being in queue for approx. 1 hour we reached inside the temple. The view inside the temple is fascinating; there is a huge statue of Nandi in front of sanctum sanctorum of jyotirlina. Photography inside the temple is strictly prohibited. So we couldn’t take photos inside the temple.

The market in front (around 300 mtrs away) of the main temple.

So after some shopping we preceded towards Lord Mallikarjuna Temple. The entrance to main temple is not allowed from front main gate, one can reach temple from the queue complex only which is from the left side of the main gate.
The temple looks very beautiful because of its magnificent architecture and very tall and attractive gopuram.

After a very good darshan and Abhishek we came back our guest house, since we were very tired we gone to a very sound sleep.
20.10.2010
In the morning we planned to take a sightseeing tour to the places of interest around Srisailam. We hired a tempo for Rs. 150 for sightseeing around Srisailam. The auto driver played music system in auto, but the songs were going beyond our head as they all were in Telugu and we were not able to understand even a single word. Well we reached our first destination Sakshi ganapati.
Sakshi Ganapati:
It is a temple of Lord Ganapati present beside the main road before arriving to Srisailam. The temple is small and old.
It is believed that lord Ganesh records the names of pilgrims who come to Srisailam and shows the list to Lord Shiva so that they will be blessed. All the pilgrims who come to Srisailam should visit him and pray to enter their names in the list.

Sikharam:
Sikharam is the most important of all sightseeing places in Srisailam. It is the highest peak of the Srisailam Mountain range and is 2830 feet above sea level, we climbed up the steps and stood on the peak to have an aerial view of the Srisailam temple and the surrounding mountains. Skanda purana tells that one can attain Mukti by just seeing Sikharam. There is also a temple of Shiva built here and are hundreds of small shivalingams inside this beautiful temple. There is a view point to see the Mallikarjuna temple from here.

After enjoying beautiful mountain Shikharam we moved to our next destination:
Paladhara – Panchdhara:
We then proceeded to Paladhara-Panchadhara. We climbed down a hill to a spot where there is a small waterfall. The water is said to have medicinal properties. Here there is a small temple dedicated to the Hindu guru and Saint Adi Shankaracharya of the 8th century who meditated here. The surroundings is thick with vegetation and there are locals selling herbal plants, seeds, roots and bark that claim cure to some of the common diseases.

After this cherishing sightseeing tour in and around Srisailam we returned back to our guest house, took our dinner and gone to bed as next day we had to start our journey for Tirupati. Thus ended our memorable trip to Srisailam. This place is a paradise for devotees and nature lovers. Remaining story will be soon reached to you as Srisailam Tirupati Tour Part 2.

Mukesh Bhalse- Featured Author-2012 on www.ghumakkar.com

Hello Dear Ghumakkars,
First of all, a very Happy New Year to all of you! Hope you have left the hangover behind and are as fresh as a daisy on the first day of 2012. Because if you are alert, you would be surprised by the Editorial coming out on the 1st instead of the usual 15th this month. This is one of the changes we are making at Ghumakkar starting January 2012. Read on to find out what else is coming your way.
We have received the response from the Jury members and are in the final stages of agreeing upon the winners of Ghumakkars of the Year 2011. So watch this space for the next few days. You might be surprised by the results.
And next, let me bring to you the first Featured Author for 2012 (for the month of January). It is none other than our bilingual Ghumakkar, Mukesh Bhalse.

Mukesh Bhalse
Mukesh joined Ghumakkar in September 2010 and since then has written 14 posts mostly on religious themes. He and his family are the devotees of Lord Shiv and have pledged to visit one Jyotirling every year. Mukesh has a good command over both Hindi and English as reflected by his vibrant and reflective travelogues in both languages. In fact, he is the only author on Ghumakkar who has written stories in both languages. Quite a feat, isn’t it? We are sure that there is much more to Mukesh than we know of right now. We’ll try to dig for more information and very soon, you too will find out more in his interview. In the meanwhile, click here to read all his stories.
And this brings me to the next change that you will notice soon enough. This channge has been made keeping in mind several requests we have received in the past from our readers. The Interview for the Featured Author will be published on the 15th instead of on the last day of the month as it was being published in 2011. So you won’t have to wait for one entire month to read Mukesh’s interview. So what else can I say! Watch out! And if there is anything specific you would want to know about Mukesh, mail your questions to us at info@ghumakkar.com and we will try to get the answers for you.
Another change that you might notice on the 15th is that you will not receive a newsletter from us as you have been receiving over the past year. This newsletter is being replaced by another feature that you will find out a couple of paragraphs down. In the last newsletter on December 15th, we asked for your opinion on whether the newsletter should stay. We did receive a few responses but we need to hear from more folks to make us change the course of our action. So after reading this entire editorial, if you still feel strongly that the newsletter should stay in lieu of the new feature, feel free to leave a comment.
On popular demand and after quite a few discussions with Ghumakkars and amongst ourselves, we have decided to start publishing Ghumakkar Insights on the 22nd of every month. These insights will be travel articles that are not travelogues written by Ghumakkars. In fact, the first one has already been published. Check out the first Ghumakkar Insights written by Archana Sundara. As experienced Ghumakkars, I’m sure that you will have some useful fundas that you wish to share with fellow Ghumakkars. If you do have some, send us an email at info@ghumakkar.com and we will help you publish it. Remember, while we can create slots for publishing these articles, it is ultimately up to Ghumakkars to provide us with enough material to sustain it. So we will look forward to a huge response to this.
We are introducing a new digest that will be published on Ghumakkar to replace the Newsletter that you usually receive on the 15th. This digest will contain all the information that the Newsletter used to contain (Featured Story, Featured Destination, and Featured Author) and probably more. It will be right here on the website and will be published on the last day of every month.
Amongst all that is changing, there is one thing that remains the same (at least for now). And it is the Authletter, the newsletter that the authors at Ghumakkar receive on the last day of every month. This Newsletter is special in the sense that it contains information specifically meant for our authors. I wouldn’t say a word more. If you are an author, you would have received the mailer yesterday. And if you are not, it’s time to write your first post if you really want to know.
And now that I have talked so much about change, let me talk about it some more. :) After all, what is an Editorial without some fundas!
As a very cliched saying goes “Change is the only thing constant in this world.” But it is not easy to accept change and it is really hard to accept a change within oneself. At times, we consider ourselves too perfect to require any change.
Faced with the choice between changing one’s mind and proving that there is no need to do so, almost everyone gets busy on the proof. ~John Kenneth Galbraith

We love to listen
And that is when we stop growing. Our physical growth may stop when we reach a certain age but there are other aspects of our personalities that we can always continue to evolve. Spiritual, mental, and emotional growths are not restricted by age and there is no upper limit to where we can reach in these aspects. So keep your mind and heart open and try to consider all suggestions that reach you in any form. And you may be surprised to discover something about yourself that you never knew or never accepted. And this is the philosophy that Ghumakkar follows. While, like any other website, Ghumakkar works within a budget, there is no limit to what all we can achieve by simply keeping our eyes and ears open. Your suggestions and feedbacks help us grow and also reassure us that we are able to reach you in some form or the other. And it is because of your feedback that we have been able to understand what our readers are looking for. While we may not be able to guarantee that all your suggestions will be incorporated straight away, we can surely assure you that all your praises and suggestions for improvements will be considered and discussed and will be addressed whether by answering your concern or by incorporating your suggestions. So keep commenting and keep mailing. We want to know everything… :)
Till the next time…
